According to PRNEWSWIRE.COM on June 6th, Monsanto is facing another civil lawsuit over its product, Roundup weed killer, from a Texas family that claims the herbicide caused their father’s fatal non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The case was filed in the 21st Judicial Circuit of Missouri in St. Louis County by the surviving family members of a Texas man who used Roundup for both personal and occupational purposes between the mid-1980s and 2016. As noted in the complaint, the victim was diagnosed with Large B-cell (high grade) non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and died as a result of the blood cancer in March 2017.
Filed on April 26, 2019, the complaint describes a decades-long record of evidence that outlines the dangers associated with glyphosate or glyphosate based products. Monsanto discovered glyphosate’s herbicidal properties in 1970 and began marketing the product under Roundup in 1974. By the turn of the century, glyphosate was the most popular herbicide in the world, and Monsanto was the world’s leading producer. In 2015, glyphosate was declared a probable carcinogen for humans, most associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and hematopoietic cancers such as lymphocytic lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, B-cell lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
Despite the scientific research published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Monsanto continues to sell Roundup and glyphosate-based products, while maintaining its position that they pose no cancer risks to humans. The most recent trial testimony of Monsanto’s representatives was “there is no evidence glyphosate or glyphosate based formulations cause cancer under conditions that people are exposed to.”
