The University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center thinks doctors should apologize to families and patients when mistakes are made. The Medical Center passed a disclosure policy last year where doctors apologize to patients and families when errors occur. Reports indicate that there were 40 acknowledged errors at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center last year but only one medical malpractice lawsuit filed. Many families and patients are only looking for an apology and do not want to file a medical malpractice lawsuit. However, often in the end it is the only way for a family and/or patient to find closure because a doctor or hospital is too proud or too afraid to admit a failure occurred. Families and patients are entitled to an apology and an understanding of what went wrong.
